When one thinks of Italy, Sicily is often just thought of as the island that the "boot kicks." However, Sicily is full of diversity through its centuries of influence by different cultures; Italians, Moors, Greeks, and several others. The climate in Sicily is often warm as it is situated in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea. During the summer months, the temperature averages can be from 15 to about 35 centigrade.
If you're interested in visiting Sicily, the best option would be to take a ferry from the mainland; the most popular ports to deport are Naples and Palermo. The ferry ride takes approximately 4 hours, but don't let that hinder you because there are several sources of entertainment on board, such as amusement arcades, TVs, movies, and even a discoteca, all while enjoying the beautiful blue sea.

As this destination would be a bit more costly for a backpacker/mochilero, if one decides to indulge, it would be recommended to go during the low peak season of the summer months, which would be May to the end of June. Prices are slightly lower and the crowds are less hectic. And just because Syracuse is an island/vacation destination doesn't mean that it doesn't offer young adventurers an affordable place to stay.
Hostels in Syracuse
As stated earlier, the prices are a bit higher than some hostels back in the main continent of Europe, but it never hurt to treat oneself to an island of bliss.
